History
The Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona was created in 1998 when its founders became aware of a disparity of funding available for the working poor in women’s healthcare and subsequently held a series of public forums in the communities to search for a solution. The Foundation was created as a public service to the communities of Arizona.
The Desert Cancer Foundation Arizona is structured to provide awareness and information to educate individuals about existing resources, available drugs and cancer treatments. This is accomplished through public informational meetings, workshops, lectures and health fairs. Health fairs, free mammograms and breast self exam instruction are provided to qualified women through community grants received for this purpose. A community awareness luncheon, “Learning, Loving and Living with Cancer” is held each October with a focus on cancer survivors.
Collaboration with local, state and national health organizations has been established to provide access to resources for those in need. A project to create a treatment funding program for uninsured women and their families will be initiated when the Foundation has reached its funding goals.
The Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona continually monitors our communities to develop programs identifying critical care issues. The Foundation secured a grant from the Phoenix Affiliate, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, partnering with Maricopa County Integrated Health Systems to bring mammography screening and breast self exam instruction to 200 uninsured, medically underserved women in culturally diverse communities in the East Valley, Maricopa County.
The Desert Cancer Foundation of Arizona will allocate additional resources in accordance with the established guidelines to raising funds to further its mission. A granting team has been assembled to secure monies for education, treatment and programs. The Foundation has no paid staff and relies on volunteers for all projects and operations. An annual event has been created to benefit the endowment fund.
